Similar look, different jobs
Activated carbon and anthracite are both black granular media and are regularly confused in purchase enquiries — but they do entirely different jobs. Ordering the wrong one wastes money and leaves the treatment problem unsolved.
Anthracite: physical filtration
Anthracite is a hard, low-ash coal used as a physical filtration layer. It captures suspended particles in the depth of the bed. It does not adsorb chlorine, colour or odour to any useful degree. Choose anthracite when the problem is turbidity and suspended solids — typically as the top layer of a dual-media or multi-grade filter.
Activated carbon: adsorption
Granular activated carbon works by adsorption. Its enormous internal surface area captures dissolved substances: free chlorine, taste and odour compounds, colour and dissolved organics. Choose carbon when the problem is chemical — dechlorination before an RO plant or resin bed, odour in process water, or organics polishing of treated effluent.
A quick decision rule
Ask what you are removing. If you can filter it out — silt, turbidity, precipitated iron — the answer is media filtration with sand and anthracite. If it is dissolved — chlorine, odour, colour, organics — you need activated carbon. Many plants correctly use both, in sequence: a multi-grade filter followed by an activated carbon filter, which together form standard RO pre-treatment.
One more difference that matters commercially: anthracite lasts for years and is topped up, while activated carbon exhausts as its pores fill and must be replaced on a planned cycle.
